Various Artists: GMS02 - The Vatican Museum
Grand Museum Series: This collection began with works seized in France after Napoleon’s defeat in 1815. Under the influence of the Papcy, works of major significance were both acquired and commissioned. The galleries contain early paintings by Raphael, as well as his very lst, and impressive pieces by Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Melozzo da Forli. The pope also commissioned Raphael to do the frescoes for the papal apartments, and Michlangelo to decorate the walls and ceilings of the Sistine Chapel.
